Question : What Health Insurance do you Recommend for Retiring Cancer Survivor?
My mom is over 60 and she is hoping to retire soon. However, is it true that health insurance costs almost $1000 per month for cancer survivors? She is in remission over 5 years.. She is currently only working to avoid high health insurance costs.

I am going through the same questions. I am 55,single, with prostate cancer that is always beingtreated to keep it from running amuck.Continuation of insurance under COBRA for me willbe about $1000 per month. It does not matter if Ihave cancer because COBRA continues existinginsurance without reappying for it. I couldreapply for new insurance to get it down, butbecause of my preexisting condition, there are noinsurance companies that would take me. COBRAcontinuation is my only option.

it is virtually impossible to get insurance if youare a cancer survivor. in Texas, there is theTexas Risk Pool, run by the state, whereby thosewho cannot find insurance elsewhere can get itthere...it's very expensive, $719/month for a 60year old cancer survivor. the benefits are prettygood, and it's run by Blue Cross. it was BlueCross who told me of it, so they might be a goodsource of information for your state.

It is so sad, but true in that so many people areunable to find insurance, especially if they havehad any sort of pre-existing condition, such ascancer. It will be pretty much impossible for herto find an insurance company that will cover hershould she need to insure herself without thegroup policy she gets right now through heremployer. Check with some of the options thatothers before me offered here. Then also checkinto an alternative option that can be used withor without traditional insurance. It's Ameriplanand in the 16 years they have been in businessthey have helped many, many people who were facedwith situations similar to this here.
http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/cberney Check outthe plans, as well as search for providers, andspecialists that are in your area, or more so yourmothers. And let me know if you have anyquestions. Good Luck and hopefully you will beable to find what will work for your mom so thatshe can in fact retire, and do so without the fearof health insurance costs.

I used to sell insurance and I know that if shehas survived 5 plus years without cancer commingback that most insurance companies will take herbut because of her age she will pay a lot forinsurance. Also when you call the insurancecompanies unless they directly ask you over thephone dont tell them she had cancer. I am notsaying lie definelty tell them when therepresentative is in your home trying to sell youthe insurance. The best way to find good insurancecompanies is to call the insurance commisonersoffice for your state and they can mail you a listof all good standing insurance companies. Also theContinuation of benefits rehabilition act calledcobra is by law if she is single she can get cobrafor 18 months she has to pay a little more thanwhat her company paid for her group plan butsometimes this is a good route. They dont considerpre existing conditions unless they were excludedfrom her plan while she was employed but veryimportant she has to elect this thru her Humanresource dept within 30 days of her last day ofemployment or she wont be eligible. Also Medicaresometimes lets you get it earlier than 65 go toyour local medicare(social security office) tofind out if your mom is eligible. Also if your momhad someone other than herself on her group planthru her job she can get cobra for 24 months andif she has a disability it is longer.
