Question : How do you obtain health insurance, for someone who is already in the hospital?
Hello,My friend is already in the hospital. He was in a car accident. He does not have insurance, but I am trying to provide some kind of coverage for him. Most health insurance companies will not cover someone who is already in the hospital. And he does not qualify for Medi-Cal. So are there any other options available out there, so that he can get the surgery he needs?

All Answers: Answer #1 Since the accident has already occurred, unfortunately, your friend propbably won't becovered. The car accident is considered apre-exisiting condition and health insurancecompanies will not cover pre-exisitnig conditionsif you have not had coverage within the past 63days. You might want to check with the billingdepartment at the hospital and make paymentarrangements. - answered by ms gemini
Answer #2 If he was in a car accident and thehospitalization is a direct result of theaccident, the car insurance should be picking upthe tab. - answered by zippythejessi
Answer #3 You go to an agent to get some quotes, but itwon't cover THIS accident!!If he was in a caraccident, he needs to put a claim in under hisauto policy for medical costs, or the auto policyof the person who's car he was riding in. Otherwise, he's going to have to sue the person atfault for the accident, but that can take years. - answered by mbrcatz17
Answer #4 I'm with ms- if he won't qualify forMedicaid/Medi-Cal, then he's SOL for regularinsurance. Best bet is to throw himself on themercy of the hospital- most have incomeguidelines, sliding scale fees and other programsto help cover bills of unisured patients- and manyhave financial counselors that can work with himto find the best solutions. Check around with thephysician too- there will be seperate bills forhospital care and physician services. Often inhardship cases, the physicians may decide not tocharge for their portion- but you have to ask. They may also be able to (or there may be a socialworker available) who can refer him to low-cost orno-cost healthcare providers in the area for hisfollow up care. Bottom line- ask everyone, don'tbe shy- there is bound to be some way to minimizethe bills if you're willing to do someresearch.Best of luck to both of you! - answered by ariebk
