Question : How can I find a health insurance provider that will cover costs for getting Accutane?
Hi, I have never bought health insurance before, and I would like to know how I could find out if a particular health insurance provider would cover the costs of me going to a dermatologist and getting Accutane. Can anyone help me?

Answer #2 Because that's a risky and costly procedure, itmay not be easy. Check the websites of theinsurers - most of the big ones have them, andlook at their formulary. (It's a list of all thedrugs they cover and if it's preferred, it'scheaper, if it's not preferred, you're going tospend top dollar.) If it's not a covered thing, you might able to prove medical necessity withhelp of your PCP and the derm. It's not aguarantee, because if something is not covered bya plan, you can't force them to cover it. You canshow them it'd be cheaper in the long run if theycover it and hope for the best. Answer #4 I have read several places that a full course ofAccutane treatment costs around $3,000 but that isjust from random Web browsing, and I would imaginethat the course you take depends on the severityof your condition and how well your respond totreatment. A couple of cautionary observationsbefore I go on, though. First, Accutane is a“last resort” acne treatment because of itspotentially severe side effects, so make sure youreally need to take something like this. Second, apersonal side note: I dated a girl who tookAccutane and it made her very, verydepressed. It’s always been my opinion thatbefore you think about how to pay for a medicalcost, you need to choose who will take care ofyou, what treatment is needed, and go from there.Pick out a dermatologist you trust and ask themabout plans they participate in and about costs. Then comparison shop for different plans until youfind one that you like. Accutane is covered bymany different insurance companies, so that shouldnot be a problem, as long as your doctor says youneed the treatment. Try MostChoice.com. You canquickly compare plans and talk with multiplestate-licensed health insurance agents without anypressure to buy anything from anyone. But first Iwould find out who you want to treat you becausethat will affect your choice of health plan;you’ll want to be sure that your health careprovider participates with the health insuranceyou end up buying. You can visit MostChoice here: http://www.mostchoice.com/health-insurance.cfmI’ve included a couple of links to Web sites aboutacne and Accutane. I thought the community theremight be a little more useful for you than thisgeneral forum.Hope this helps,Barnes@MostChoice - answered by MostChoice.com
